Fashion & Textile Children’s Trust
Registered Charity No.257136
The Fashion & Textile Children's Trust provide education and wellbeing grants to support children (0-18 years) whose parents or guardians work, or have recently worked in the UK fashion and textile industry. This trade connection needs to be for a minimum of three years, within the last 9 years. The employment role can include retail, head office, manufacturing, wholesale, design, distribution, bridal wear, menswear, knitwear, soft furnishings and supermarkets that sell clothing. For list of roles that are considered, please click here.
FTCT consider school fee applications in exceptional circumstances, and support vulnerable children who are facing difficult circumstances at home which impacts on their care and development. As a result the family circumstances must meet at least one of the following criteria:
- Children affected by the debilitating illness or death of either or both parents,
- Children cared for by grandparents, relatives or friends where their parents are unable to;
- Children who have suffered significant emotional, physical or psychological abuse ie through abuse or neglect
- Children who have attachment disorders due to adoption.
FTCT considers the funding of boarding school places where there is a strong case made as to how the difficulties faced within the family home may require a residential placement and enhanced pastoral care to access education.
An independent professional such as a GP, Family Support Worker, Social Worker or Psychologist must support the application and this should include the need for the placement and why the state education system has been unable to meet the young person's needs.
FTCT make a contribution towards grants in the region of £1000-£1500 per term and we will never be the sole funding partner of the total fees payable to the school. We work closely with other educational trusts within the Educational Trusts Forum, to enable a package of support, taking into account any bursary assistance and parental contribution.
Applications should be made at least 3 months before the term in which the child is planned to start at the school. This allows sufficient time for the parent/guardian to obtain the necessary information and for consideration by our Cases Committee.
Grants are for an agreed period and are reviewed annually, for example a suitable schooling milestone; completion of GCSEs with the possibility to extend through 6th Form studies. Continued funding is payable only while the UK fashion and trade employment conditions are met, and the need for the placement is still current.
School Fee Update December 2018
The FTCT Board of Trustees have taken the decision that, effective from 1 July 2019, the Fashion & Textile Children's Trust (FTCT) will no longer consider either day or boarding school fee applications.
The implications of many recent cutbacks and closures in businesses connected to the manufacturing, distribution and selling of fashion and textile goods is having a far reaching impact on employees in this sector and, as a result, their children. The Trustees therefore want to ensure that the charity has the long term financial capacity to support the demand for our grants. The majority of our grants today are small grants, for essential items such as school uniform, bedding, clothing, footwear and white goods to meet the basic needs of children. FTCT can also provide financial help for children with additional needs, such as mobility equipment, sensory toys, therapies and more.
If you are a parent whose child is currently receiving a grant, please note the following:
- FTCT will honour all current school fee grant commitments, to the end of the confirmed grant period.
- If FTCT is part of a group of charities supporting a child, this will remain unchanged.
- Children currently supported can apply for further school fee funding. If successful, the grant will not extend beyond July 2021.
If you are currently seeking funding for school fee support, please note the following:
- Enquiries received between now and 30 June 2019 will be considered, however new school fee awards will be funded for a maximum of two years i.e. from September 2019 to July 2021.
FTCT intends to remain part of the Educational Trust Forum, and will be happy to consider grants to support school uniform and other essential items for the child, where the parent has a relevant trade connection to the UK fashion and textile industry and meets all other criteria, as outlined on our website.
